Front Matter - Contents (TABLE OF)

DISPLAY HEAD

“CONTENTS” is set in caps as a section display head.

ORDER

Elements listed in the contents should appear U/lc1 in the order listed below. Internal contents pages (i.e., contents that precede a part, chapter, section, or appendix) are not included.

  1.  Front Matter: Includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Foreword

Committee Roster (In BPVC this is called 'Personnel')

Summary of Changes

  1. Display Heads. All display heads (highest level) are listed on contents pages.

  2. Text. First-level text heads are listed on all contents pages. Second- through fifth-level heads are excluded. All first-level heads must have titles.

  3. Figures.2 The heading for this area should be singular (i.e., "Figure") if there is only one such element in the text.

  4. Tables.2 The heading for this area should be singular (i.e., "Table") if there is only one such element in the text.

  5. Back Matter: Includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  1. Mandatory Appendices

  1.  Do not list figures, tables, or text heads that appear in appendices.

  2. The heading should be singular (i.e., "Mandatory Appendix") if there is only one such element in the text.

  3. The heading must state whether the appendix is mandatory or nonmandatory. It is the committee's responsibility to specify this information.

  1. Nonmandatory Appendices

  2. Do not list figures, tables, or text heads that appear in appendices.

  3. The heading should be singular (i.e., "Nonmandatory Appendix") if there is only one such element in the text.

  4. The heading must state whether the appendix  is mandatory or nonmandatory. It is the committee's responsibility to specify this information.

1 U/lc = the first letter of every word is cap, except for units of measurement, which are set as they normally appear in text (e.g., Pa, in., kW, deg,°F), and articles, conjunctions, and prepositions less than four letters long, which are set lowercase unless appearing as the first word (e.g., From, With).
